His lyrics are woeful, in the grand theme of things. I admire the fact he tries to be an energetic performer but even that's skin-deep. You have this brain freeze. Mind you, who knows what would have happened if I had started the car? At first he thought the figure beside his car wanted a selfie. He slips into comedy mode here.

I'd only just bought it and it didn't suit me. The kids didn't like the watch either, it was rose gold. He was shaken for a long time, he admits. Oscar, too. Even a Deliveroo was quite tense — until you realise, 'Oh, it's just pizza.

His son coped better, he says. I couldn't go there for ages. I wanted to leave the country! But ultimately, there was no physical damage and it could have been so much worse. A lot of people told me stories afterwards, things that had happened to them, but that's what it is to live in a big city. By nature, he says, he's a glass-half-full kind, the sort of person who looks forward rather than back.

He's not given to analysis of any kind. Much has been made of his relationship with his father, a comedy genius in his own way but whose path in the industry was more chequered. Ray Cameron — his professional name — was a comedy writer who, along with Barry Cryer, was responsible for the hit Kenny Everett TV shows in the 70s and 80s.

But when Michael was seven and his sister Lucy five, his parents split up and his father moved to the US. Just ten years later, in — 'before I'd really truly got a chance to know him' — Ray was dead. Michael is packing his ambition suitcase and heading Stateside, with a show in New York in February.

There had been no American Dream for him, and the work had dried up. Michael was told it was a heart attack. He mostly remembers that before he passed away his father had been really upset that he hadn't been able to afford to buy him his first car.

It was only in that Michael discovered the truth: his father had actually taken his own life. Much to Michael's disgust, his stepmother made the revelation public in It's not a subject he wants to get into today 'I owe it to everyone not to feed it' , which is understandable. It does make you read his autobiography, in which he admits that he hero-worshipped his dad, with fresh eyes, though.

When you're older you try to make sense of it, but all that calms right down. He grew up in a large house in Hampstead, which was later sold to Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne, and now lives in the same street. He's obviously a hands-on dad with a happy marriage, and it all seems much more solid than his own childhood was. My dad wasn't able to parent like that, because he wasn't around. Also, my wife and I have been together for 20 years so that's the stability.

Sometimes it's about luck, if you meet someone and you don't argue, if they don't annoy you. I have that in my marriage. Every time I see my wife I think, 'This is great. Interestingly, he's packing his ambition suitcase and heading Stateside, with a show in New York in February. He always said he wasn't interested in the American market, but playing venues all over the world and the 'globalisation of the internet' have changed his mind.

And if people like his mate James Corden can do it, why not him? Is this one personal, though? His father thought he could crack the US market, and was disappointed. It did feel like a case of, "If you take your eye off the ball here and don't make it there, then what? I remember what it's like getting up on stage, having to introduce yourself to people who don't know who you are.

I think there was one time when I was actually in the loo in the dressing room and they all started bitching about me. Criticisms levelled at the bubbly McIntyre by fellow comics range from the hostile to the more affectionate see box, right and it is true that his brand of inoffensive, light observational humour — not controversial or edgy but usually very funny — has its detractors and it has been branded safe or comedy beige.

His topics revolve around family life with his wife and children, Lucas and Oscar, or a whole host of social etiquettes including ordering wine from a restaurant. We have paid good money. Have a smell? But what he seems to be concerned about is more personal hostility and it is a hurt he has been nurturing for some time.
